VT-Lab: making possible the metaverse for the AEC sector

The Metaverse is a concept we have been hearing about for the past 30 years or so, in numerous futuristic and sci-fi films.

Recently, there have been a drastic change in the paradigm that has made that this concept questions not only the way we see the world, but also how we participate in it. The Metaverse it is here and it is important to pay attention to the changes that comes with it.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of META (before Facebook), is the one that is leading this paradigm shift with his clear commitment for the Metaverse, shaping the foundations of what the future will be in all its stages, not only in terms of entertainment and leisure, but also in terms of new ways of working: digital, editable, experimental and above all, more productive.

Metaverse AEC

Here at VT-Lab for many years, we have been developing the metaverse in the AEC sector, promoting the digitalization of the sector through the integration of BIM methodology with technologies such as Virtual and Augmented reality, with the main objective of improving sector productivity, but what is the metaverse and what benefits does it bring to the sector? How do we carry it out at VT-Lab?

We tell you all about it in this article

What is the Metaverse?

In 1992 we talked about the Metaverse thanks to the sci-fi novel and movie Snowcrash. In this novel, this term referred to a virtual world in which humans were avatars and they could interact with each other. The author of the novel gives the name of metaverse to this virtual world that exists further than the real one, in which we can enter with avatars thanks to Virtual and Augmented reality devices, that allow us to have a truly immersive experience.

As we commented previously, this concept has been existing since decades, although until now it has been related with the leisure and entertainment. The truth is that this concept is not limited to that, we are talking of a digital world, with virtual interconnected communities that would lead to new business models.

In conclusion, the Metaverse makes possible, through virtual and augmented reality, the creation of an immersive and tridimensional cyber-physical space that will offer us a parallel and digital word in which we can conduct not only leisure activities, but applications that will help us do both day-to-day tasks, as well as work processes in a more efficient way.

Therefore, it is in our hands to extract all the advantages that these technologies are offering and implement them in our sector in an intelligent way to contribute to the much-needed digitalization and to the increase of productivity that it has been needing for decades.

Without going any further, in VT-Lab we already conduct virtual meeting that allow us to interact with each other through avatars in a digital replica of our office. In this way, we eliminate the physical barriers, increase efficiency in our work processes and, consequently, improve the productivity of the entire team.

How does VT-Lab carry out the Metaverse for the AEC sector?

The digital world generated in the Metaverse unifies with the physical world, creating spaces where it is possible the interaction between them, to the point where they work together.

This what we carry out in VT-Lab from the first minute. We are specialist in the creation of cyber physical spaces that enable to work in the physical and digital world as if they were one. Even though it sounds like fiction, this is already possible and now a days there are many companies from the AEC sector that have trusted in us to contribute in the digitalization of their processes thanks to the integration of the BIM models in Augmented and Virtual reality. But what are the advantages and how is it achieved?

Working with BIM models in AR and VR allows us, for starters, to extract 3D models from a 2D screen, to start consuming them in three dimensions and in an immersive way. In this sense, we don’t lose any of its properties for consuming it in a wrong interface.

2D vs 3D

Once we bring BIM models to Augmented and Virtual reality, our job is to extract the maximum benefit in order to carry out the tasks and processes in the most efficient way possible, that is the reason why we develop solutions that enable to work on the models accessing to the data, father than only visualizes its geometry.

This is possible thanks to VT-Platform. A web platform that allows you to upload your models to access automatically to them in AR and VR from anywhere and from any device. In this way, we take BIM models further than the BIM department, to share them with any stakeholder of the company, without the need of them to be specialists in the methodology or neither know what is a BIM model.

Achieving like so, to bring BIM models to field, closing the gap between field and office workers and achieving the improvement of the communication flow between them.
